Glittering Holiday Train Returns,
Lots of Festive Family Fun for All
Santa and his elves will be mak-
ing whistle stops along the Peninsula
this year as part of the train crew for
the 2013 Caltrain Holiday Train pre-
sented by Silicon Valley Community
Foundation. The glittering show train
returns Saturday, Dec. 7, and Sunday,
Dec. 8.
Glowing with thousands of lights
and holiday decorations, the train will
make stops at nine stations over the
two nights, collecting toys for under-
privileged children in the area. Rep-
resentatives from the Salvation Army
and members of the U.S. Marine
Corps Reserves will be on hand to
collect donations of new, unwrapped
toys.
Entertainment will be provided
at each of the stops prior to the train’s
arrival. During each 20-minute stop,
people can enjoy holiday music led
by a traditional Salvation Army brass
band and onboard carolers. Santa,
Mrs. Claus, Frosty, Rudolph and the
rest of the North Pole gang will get
off the train to greet children and
their families and take pictures.
The train starts both nights at
4 p.m. at the San Francisco
Caltrain Station. On Saturday, the
festivities will kick-off with a brief
ceremony to welcome the crowd
that will include speakers, musical
entertainment and a chance to
meet Santa before he heads down
the Peninsula.
Santa’s helpers can get
into the holiday spirit by
donating to the Holiday Train
at www.holiday-train.org.

Depot Design in New Book
More than 30 years ago, Henry
E. Bender Jr. began researching the
history of Southern Pacific depots,
buildings integral to the development
of hundreds of communities across
California, including along the San
Francisco Peninsula.
Recently released by Signature
Press, Bender’s book Southern
Pacific Lines Standard-Design
Depots is packed with photographs,
architectural drawings and text tell-
ing the story of depots that were
often the centers of town. Using a
set of 26 different standard designs,
Southern Pacific planted depots
throughout the state and the West,
from one-story, no-frills structures
to two-story depots with a home
upstairs for the station agent and his
family.
What I wanted to accomplish
was to document the subject fairly
thoroughly,” the San Jose resident
explained. “There had been some
books published that were basically
picture books with some limited
description but these books didn’t
go into details like what the depot
dimensions were, when they were
abandoned and so on.”
Well-known depot historian Henry
Bender Jr. stands in front of the
two-story Colonnade-style Millbrae
station depot which is mentioned
in his book “Southern Pacific Lines
Standard-Design Depots”.
Bender has maintained an inter-
est in railroads through a career
spent as a mechanical engineer, a
corporate librarian and a technical
writer. Looking in 1981 for a railroad

Real-time Information is Here
Caltrain’s
long antici-
pated real-time
departure sys-
tem is up and
running on
the website.
The real-
time feature
officially went
live in October.
A box on
the right-hand
side of the home page
allows users to select a station and
see departure times for the next three
north- and southbound trains. The
information is in a “count-down”
format.
Departure times for individual
stations are displayed on the “sta-
tion” page, which can be found
under the “station” menu.
A mobile-friendly web interface
option for smartphones or tablets also
is available at www.caltrain.com/
realtime.
To help riders become acquainted
with the system, a list of “Frequently
Asked Questions” is available on the
website.

Work Begins on Rail’s
Advanced Signal System
Caltrain has begun work on an
advanced signal system that will
enhance the safety and lead to the
electrification of the rail system.
The Communications Based
Overlay Signal System/Positive Train
Control Project is the first step in the
Caltrain Modernization program.
The CBOSS PTC system equips
the corridor with federally mandated
safety technology and increases sys-
tem capacity, which will help accom-
modate future increases in ridership.
During this phase of the project,
fiber optic cable will be installed
along the Caltrain right of way so
that signals, trains, dispatchers and
other components of railroad opera-
tions can communicate seamlessly.
Once complete, the system will
monitor and, if necessary, control
train movement in the event of
human error. The technology is de-
signed to prevent accidents like the
one in Southern California in 2008.
That incident prompted legislation
